Summer camp! An American tradition as classic as apple pie and blue jeans…or Boy Scouting itself. The boys of Troop 115 had a great summer, spending time at two of NorCal’s best camps for new scouts; Camp Lassen and Marin Sierra. Knowing that they would have two weeks at two camps, the Scouts agreed to a strategy that maximized their fun, and the opportunity to work on advancement.
They chose to focus on merit badges at Camp Lassen, and earned First Aid, Pioneering, Wilderness Survival, and Leathercraft. Lassen program activity options also included mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, archery, and rifle shooting. The scouts made great progress, while having a fantastic experience!
A couple weeks later, the scouts focused on the Marin Sierra “Trail to First Class” program where they completed multiple Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class requirements; Totin’ Chip, Fireman Chit, orienteering, plant identification, Leave No Trace, BSA swim test and water rescue, knots and lashings, basic first aid, and a service project. Clark G. particularly enjoyed the Marin Sierra waterfront and learning to kayak, while Mark A. focused on his Bird Study merit badge, and Matt K earned Rifle Shooting. Camp offers “drop in” merit badges that scouts can complete in a short amount of time, and the scouts added Wood Carving and Fingerprinting to their list of achievements.
